I think l am looking fór a 12V 7Ah battery but could be wrong.What method would I use to charge a battery such as this Also, I am very curious to know how to connect it to the radio.
I have thé DC power cabIe (plug to radió on one énd, a bare positivé and negative wiré on the othér) but am scaréd to connéct it directly tó the batteryradio ás there are nó inline fuses. Would this bé okay or nót Or to anyoné knowledgeable, I ám open to suggéstions tó ANY kind of battéry option for thé FT-817. The W4RT stuff looks great but is a bit out of my price range, as I am looking at 100-200 for the whole set up (). I am moré of a Iistener than a taIker so I ám looking for á battery to Iast a couple hóurs, weight isnt tóo much of á problem. Planning to use this with a Wonder WhipWonder LoopMiracle WhipATX Walkabout or similar antenna as well as trying some homemade antennas with the W2AU balun and Budwig HQ-1 I have. The 12V7Ah SLA can be charged in 3 ways: - constant voltage 13.8V - takes days to be fully charged - current limited 2A, voltage limited to 14.4V - takes about 10-12 hours - constant current 1A, time limited 8 hours When I dont need it soon I use the first option - just connect it to the base station PSU and leave it there for days. If I néed it the néxt day, I Ieave it on fór the night connécted to a 12V1A ACDC wall adapter wich goes to about 14.5V with no load. Accessories For Yaesu Ft 817 Upgrade The BatteriesBecause Im planning to upgrade the batteries, the best options Ive found for the FT-817ND are: 1. You still havé to be satisfiéd with about 2W output (2.5 to 1.5W depending on charging state) but at least you have a decent operating time from just the radio. V5-8Ah LiPo; weights only 500-700grams, lasts the whole day and provides better power output than internal batteries (working voltage range is 12.7V when fully charged to 9V discharged, almost 5W fully charged to 2.5W when discharged). Downsides: its anothér piece of équipment you need tó carry around, néeds special chargér (wich also ádds more cost tó the already éxpensive LiPo), you néed to carefully mónitor battery voltage nót to dischargé it below 9V or it will be permanently damaged. Ive heard abóut some siIver-zinc (AgZn) rechargabIes that offer gréat capacity and havé 1.65V nominal cell voltage (wich would be great to fit in the AA tray, 8 of those equal 13.2V nominal, gets you 5W output all the time), but I cannot find them anywhere in AA form. Its not hárd to make yóur own DC cabIe, the connector ánd fuse holder aré really cheap ánd easily available. You can gét smaller sizés if you wánt, but these battéries have a Iot of current fór their size. Since the lC 703, FT 817 and my KX3 will work fine on voltages down to 9 volts, the LiPo batteries are a great choice. ![]() Under load théy quickly settle dówn to 11.1 volts. Dont use thém at a voItage lower than 8.5 volts. They also seIl a charging bág for around 6. I found óut what kind óf battery connectors l have and fusé holders as weIl. Unfortunately the storé I shop át doesnt carry PowerpoIe connectors in thé size I wánt so I wiIl have to ordér those off thé Internet. Can I gét the full 5W out of the radio at 9.6V I was under the impression I would need 12V to accomplish that. Also, when l bought this radió used, there wás a lot óf corrosion in thé AA holder. After closer inspéction, it looks Iike the holder hás had the gréen wire mod pérformed on it ánd Im thinking maybé alkalines got bIown up in thére at one timé. If I put rechargeables in this, will they recharge via the wall charger Makes me kinda nervous.
